Welcome to our series on Matthew! Our series is titled “Matthew: The Return of the King” as a not-so-subtle reference to the famous “Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” book.
As in Lord of the Rings, the people of the kingdom are awaiting the true king to return to the throne. From the very beginning, God had promised a seed to man that would destroy the serpent. As history moved, God would eventually choose Abram (eventually Abraham) to be the recipient of promise; from his seed, all the nations would be blessed (Genesis 12). As time continued to move, God would grow the nation of Abraham into a mighty nation and he would extend his covenant to Moses; if the people remained faithful, they would be blessed, but if they neglected the Word of God, they would be cursed (Deuteronomy 28).
The people of God, just like all humans do, would fail the Lord and so the Lord would bring about their judgement through various means (Daniel 7). Yet, even in the people’s unfaithfulness, God would prove Himself faithful once more after 450 years of silence; behold, the voice of one who cries in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord (Matthew 3)!
In our deep-dive into the Book of Matthew, we will see the newfound hope in Jesus Christ, the King of Glory. We will see His power to save and His mercy and grace to an undeserving people. We will see the King on His throne and His message of salvation sent throughout the nations; the Word of God was made flesh, dwelt among us living a perfect and sinless life, died on a cross, was buried and rose again the third day, appeared to many witnesses and ascended to sit at the right hand of the Father; friends, the King of Glory will return once more to rule and to reign; He is the King of Glory and His throne and dominion will never pass away!
