Matthew 22:34-40
Our culture has determined that any and every law is oppressive; if there is a law that keeps us from what we want, we think the law is evil! The thought sounds precisely like the serpent in the garden; “Did God really say?” is the constant refrain of the west.
The reality of the matter is that God DID say and that when He said, He did not provide law for oppression, but rather, He provided the law that will reveal His requirements of righteousness.
We cannot fulfill those righteous requirements, but thankfully, Jesus came and fulfilled the Law on our behalf. Having fulfilled the Law, He became the atoning sacrifice for our sins and having rose again, He became the firstfruits of the resurrection which guarantees the resurrection for all that believe in His death, burial and resurrection.
Having done all that, God provides the Holy Spirit for us which changes our heart and causes us to not only obey the law, but to *want* to obey the law! The law is not oppressive, but a tool from which we learn to love God and look more like Him!
